ACRPC Brownfields Program

What are brownfields?
brown·fields
n.
real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.

Brownfields are properties that may be affected by hazardous waste material. Contamination may stem from current or past activities on or near the property. Redeveloping brownfields can reduce public and environmental health concerns, revitalize economic centers, improve housing and neighborhoods, and reduce sprawl.

ACRPC’s Role
ACRPC can provide financial assistance to eligible public and private property owners and prospective purchasers conducting environmental site assessments and remediation planning on properties with suspected contamination. Former gas stations, manufacturing plants, sites with underground storage tanks, and automotive repair facilities are examples of potential candidates. The ultimate goal of our Brownfields Program is to help return sites with real or perceived contamination to productive uses that benefit the public good.

The Brownfields Program is overseen by a steering committee. The committee solicits and selects properties to participate in the program, advises program outreach activities, and oversees Environmental Site Assessment activities for properties participating in the program. The steering committee is responsible for reviewing, choosing, and prioritizing applicant sites to receive grant funding.

The Brownfields Program is being conducted under ACRPC’s current grant agreements with the EPA. ACRPC has been awarded 2 grants, totaling $400,000 to pursue this program.
